Only a short decade since โTempa Allstars Vol. 8โ, the OG label casts an ear over fresh tunes by longtime stalwarts and fresh legs alike, while also opening its remit farther than ever to Kenyaโs Slikback, Parisian bassbin mistress Beatrice M., and Miamiโs INVT. Itโs safe to report that everyone trades in guttural levels of subbass and ruggedest drums in a classic style and pattern, but with distance travelled since the โ00s/10s marked in the lean toward precision tooled technoid detailing and prevailing Afro-Latin accentuation.
Fair to say D1 provides the veteran ballast with a signature bit of razor cut rhythm and darkside pressure in โOniโ, a clear standout tying with a thread of brilliant drops on Tempa since 2004โs peerless โCrack Bongโ. Following the timeline, post-dubstep/UKF guy Hodge reps that wave with the crunchy rolige of โSwayโ, whilst the rest tends to a new skool dwelling in dubstep and bass musicโs long shadow, from the tweaked-out electro top lines of 96 Back harking to early Skream on โCatford Jewelzzโ, thru Kenyaโs Slikback on the powerful torque of โSeaโ, to the Latinate friction of Miamiโs INVT on โFantasy Dubโ, or Beatrice M. & Jan Loupโs crafty take on classic templates, resonating with DMZ thru SP:MC or 2562.
