Bim Sherman
Ghetto Dub
100% necessary reissue of Bim Sherman’s self-released ’88 dub masterpiece, with Adrian Sherwood, King Tubby, and Prince Jammy on the desk diffusing rhythms by the best: The Roots Radics to Sly & Robbie, et al
Out of sight for 30 years, and with 2nd hand prices understandably climbing into triple figures due to scarcity, this overdue first vinyl reissue to ‘Ghetto Dub’ will be mana to the fiends. It takes pride of place in an ongoing programme of resurrected Sherman aces to portray the praised vocalist’s spirit at its most elusive, atmospheric. His legendarily haunting tone is threaded thru the desk by a team of JA/UK titans with the man himself in the producer role, sifting cuts from his Century Records: a label set up in UK ’84, post- his move from Kingston, JA, to London, where he became a crucial figure in the On-U Sound crew after joining their 1979 tour, and would lend to classic Dub Syndicate cuts among others.
The record’s renown has grown over the years since Sherman’s passing, in 2000, and effective dissolution of his label. Cologne’s Week-End Records now do a sterling job of preserving his legacy with this edition, richly representing the warmth and pressure of the OG in its entirety, from the clean-spurred, buoyant step of its title tune to moon-booted ‘Untitled Dub’, via the soul-tugging ace ’Station Dub’ with its unanswered doorbells, and best showcase of his voice in ‘Moving Dub’, another alright stepper in ‘World Dub’, the bloozy wooze of ‘Danger Dub’ and wickedly skewed Afro-lilt of ‘Tribulation Dub.’
