Simo Cell, Abdullah Miniawy
Dying Is The Internet
After redrawing the boundaries of avant-minimalism on last year's 'Peacock Dreams', Egyptian vocalist Abdullah Miniawy reconvenes with Paris beatmaker Simo Cell to reshape club music, tagging his infectious chants to Simon Aussel's squelchy, bass-heavy electro exercises.
Cast your minds back to 2020, long before Miniawy had appeared on Ziúr's 'Eyeroll' and ZULI's 'Lambda' and established himself as a solo artist with his idiosyncratic "opera for Muslims" 'Nigma Enigma أنيجم النَجم'. Back then he'd just put out a handful of releases, working with German trio Carl Gari and buzz-y Tunisian DJ/producer Deena Abdelwahed and 'Kill Me Or Negotiate', an all-too-brief six-track collaboration with Aussel, seemed to forecast a shift in direction. Thankfully, the duo have finally followed it up, taking a good five years to assemble a jagged contemporary club record that's infused with all the mastery and charm that made 'Peacock Dreams' so irresistible.
The album's about digital fatigue and the attention economy, apparently - it's over far too quickly, that's what we can say. 𝘽𝙧𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙛𝙛.
