Originally released as a CD-only curiosity in 1998, Electric Satie blends ambient IDM, downtempo bossa nova, and sleek electro-acoustic collage into a vivid reimagining of Erik Satie’s piano works. Think Music From Memory meets Daisyworld, by way of Warp's Artificial Intelligence series.
Mitsuto Suzuki — then already an acid techno experimenter under the ARP-2600 moniker — draws from an arsenal of vintage synths and samplers (PPG Wave, Juno 106, Prophet 5, AKAI, nord modular), layering them with percussion from Marco Bosco, vocals by Silvio Anastacio, and saxophone to reinterpret Satie’s “Gymnopédies” and “Sarabandes” in lush digital form.
Tracks like “Musique d’Ameublement” and “Son Binocle” drift through ambient zones and loungey jazz-electronica, transforming minimalist melodies into crystalline sonic miniatures. A must-have for collectors of late ’90s Japanese electronics, chill-out room alchemy, and anyone following the through-lines from Yellow Magic Orchestra to 21st century ambient hybrids.
