Originally released in 2004 and now revived by Infinite Expanse, Barycz captures the environmental and spiritual pulse of Poland’s Barycz Valley—a vast wetland shaped by centuries of coexistence between humans, birds, and water. Recorded by Anna Nacher and Marek Styczyński, the album blends field recordings of over thirty animal species with drones, reeds, zither, and subtle modular electronics, erasing the line between composition and ecosystem.
In this immersive space, the environment itself becomes the composer: frogs, insects, and birds dictate the rhythm, while human gestures hover lightly at the edges. The result is a quietly transformative experience, invoking the elemental mysticism of Félicia Atkinson, the intimacy of Grouper, and the ecological poetics of Hildegard Westerkamp, yet rooted in the folk-ritual traditions of Eastern Europe.
Barycz listens to a vanishing world and reflects it back with reverence. It’s a record that hums with life, sorrow, and renewal — a shimmering document of coexistence and loss.
