Dennis Bovell
Sufferer Sounds
𝘼 𝙫𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝙧𝙚𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚, this compilation of Dennis Bovell highlights rare dubs, roots and lovers rock from one of the most versatile producers in modern music.
Covering the period around his time with the Jah Sufferer Sound System in the late 1970s, the collection uncovers deep cuts and overlooked versions recorded mainly between 1976 and 1980, including a heavy dub of the lovers rock classic “Silly Games”. Restored and remastered at Dubplates & Mastering in Berlin, the tracks regain the clarity and weight of Bovell’s original vision.
Bovell’s impact extends across genres and generations, from producing dub poets and roots legends to shaping the sound of post-punk and new wave. His collaborations with artists such as Janet Kay, The Slits, Fela Kuti, The Pop Group and Steel Pulse reveal the breadth of his reach, while these recordings show his genius for arrangement and studio experimentation.
Accompanied by sleevenotes drawn from Bovell’s own recollections, this release offers an essential portrait of a producer whose work defined an era and continues to inspire across scenes and styles.
