Annie U R A Bird
Delectable, mutant lovers rock dub flip of Annie Lennox by Naarm’s lowkey scene lynchpin Tarquin Manek starring the honeyed but ghostly vocal of HTRK’s Jonnine. Adding to a carousel of aliases that have cropped up on these pages over the past decade – LST, Silzedrek, Static Cleaner Lost Reward, F Ingers, Tarcar – Tarquin Manek reprises the Martina Quake handle used on a 2020 concrète dub cover of Eartha Kitt for this brilliantly gritty new downstroke, delivered to cushion your post-Valentine’s tristesse. Jonnine sounds classic – as always – on ‘Annie U R A Bird’, lost in thoughts and a haze of spidery FX contrails as she meditates on Annie Lennox’s ‘Little Bird’. In tandem with Tarquin she teases out the thing for nearly nine minutes of groggy bliss, with careful digits on the mixing board making the decelerated groove writhe into itself while traces of the vocal scud outwards. The instrumental takes even longer to work its magic, coming off somewhere adjacent Guy Brewer’s (Carrier, Shifted) Tradecraft or even Ilpo Väisänen’s Kangaroo dubs with scooping subs and slithering textures uncoiling over 10+ minutes. Whew this is a gem!
