Fat Freddy's Drop
Dr Boondigga And The Big BW
New Zealand dub/reggae/funk band Fat Freddy's Drop unleash a brand new album on the world, filled to the brim with their unique, live and soulful sounds.
The Wellington-based septet are on top form through tracks like 'Boondigga', taking a more sedate and blue-tinged approach to their craft, sounding a little like Jaga Jazzist at their best, straddling all kinds of musical sub-genres, assured of their striking collective musical ability. The horn section are particularly strong, bringing a downbeat lyricism one moment only to switch things round to an upbeat New Orleans-influenced skank on 'The Nod'.
Of course, this wouldn't be a FF'sD LP without some Antipodean roots reggae revisionism, and sure enough pieces like 'The Raft' find the band melding their seamless live sound with a deep and fluid production that harkens back to classic space echo aesthetics.
