In 1990, cassette tapes arriving from Kharkiv and Kyiv introduced Erfen to the radical world of the Novaya Scena movement, where punk, avant-garde and folk influences coexisted. This encounter led to the 1993 compilation βNovaya Scenaβ and, soon after, to Ukrainian musicians traveling to Cologne. The informal recording sessions that followed between 1994 and 1995 document a unique meeting of scenes, geographies and sensibilities, capturing a rare moment of creative freedom and cross-border collaboration.
These sessions laid the foundations for what would become a unique document of exchange between the Ukrainian and Cologne underground scenes, captured across the different incarnations heard on STROOMSβs compilation.
