Chacon's last couple of albums were unexpected gems, and although 'Lay Low' loses the production wizardry of Solange collaborator John Carroll Kirby, Nick Hakim, who's engineered albums for Adrianne Lenker and Anderson .Paak steps up to the challenge. The singer returned after a two decade hiatus in 2020 with the brilliant 'Pleasure, Joy and Happiness', following it in 2023 with the soft rock-tinged 'Sundown'. And on 'Lay Low', Chacon memorialises the feeling of loving and letting go, singing sweetly and vulnerably over Hakim's downsampled beatbox rhythms and ferric R&B memories.
- Kirby even shows up for a feature on the chirpy, Chick Corea-esque 'Empire', while Hakim gets a feature spot on 'Birds', a horizontal, drumless moment that pairs Chacon's gentle tones with theremin whines and muted electric piano vamps. Quite lovely.
